The Mandolins - 1980 Shiro F-Style Mandolin

I bought this mandolin from Manchester Music in 1980 in order to "fill in" the studio instrument selection. For most of the time it sat in its case (one of the problems, due to the formaldehyde-based glue which attacked the metal parts and celluloid pickguard) rather than being out and played. However, for my last birthday, Rocky gave me a series of mandolin lessons at the local music store so it is finally being played with some regularity and, surprisingly, it has a very nice tone!

The appointments on this mandolin are very nice and it is a very attractive instrument. It seems to be a quality instrument, just from a somewhat odd manufacturer! The volume is not as big as some of the higher-priced mandolins but the tone is mellow and sweet; this may be due to the age of the instrument more than its construction.
