Welcome to our new location web page! We have been
vacationing here in Brevard, NC for the last ten
years so when it came time to choose a place to live after retirement, the choice was fairly
obvious. My sister's entire family lives in this area (they actually FOLLOWED them here!)
and we have grown to love it as well. When asked why we would choose this, somewhat remote,
area to live in, I give what I call the "short answer" of: "They still close Main Street for
the July 4th celebration". In fact, they also close it for Labor Day, Halloween (Brevard is
in Transylvania County so Halloween is a BIG deal), Christmas Parade Day and for the
White Squirrel Festival in late May.
The City of Brevard
Brevard is somewhat famous for its population (some would say infestation) of white squirrels.
These are not albinos, they are a mutant form and only occur in Transylvania County. They tend
to be more aggressive than the grey squirrels and will ferret out food regardless of its location,
which makes keeping the bird feeders stocked a real chore at times... The shot to the right was
taken this June of an early-morning raid on our bird feeder in the back yard; they could have cared
less about my being 10-15 feet from them snapping pictures like crazy...
Brevard is also home to Brevard College, which began as a 2-year, community college and is now offering a complete 4-year program. It is still small but provides a beautiful campus just blocks from Main Street where you can walk around and enjoy the seasons. It is on this campus that the July 4th fireworks show is held.
During the summer months, the Brevard Music Center hosts a "by invitation only" music camp for many of the nation's most promising musicians. The rehearsals are held in the open air concert hall and the public can come and listen to the music at any time. Additionally, musical programs are given by the schools ensembles and guest artists with concerts by a wide variety of performers - all at a nominal admission fee to the public. It is a wonderful venue for enjoying the natural setting and great music; last summer we saw Tim O'Brien, Sam Bush and the Steep Canyon Rangers (with guest banjoist, Steve Martin) there - all in only 1 day! It's a real treat to have it so near.
Brevard is still very much a small, all-American town where Main Street is closed for clebrations of the major holidays like Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. (Other local holidays are observed as well.) During these weekends, vendor and sponsor booths line the street along with those of the local artists and crafts people; music is always part of the festivities (on a varying level) and very often a car show is hosted by the local clubs. These exhibits grow larger each year and last year included close to 300 cars of all descriptions, though most are "street rods" and "custom cars". It's a treat for all and good fun besides!
I will be providing more items here as time and photos permit so check back often...
The Homesite
Several years ago we bought a 5-acre piece of land outside of town on the French Broad River to use as a homesite. We are developing the plans for the house now and will update you when they are finalized. Clicking on the image above will take you to the page showing the homesite during the different seasons. However, after moving here in July of 2008 for an extended "vacation" prior to building our home we experienced some disappointing setbacks (not the least of which was the economic tailspin). Not only were we delayed in our plans by Rocky's fall but our discussions with the local builder proved to be unproductive, at best. Considering the housing market, we decided to look at existing houses on the market and spent several disappointing weeks looking at houses that were either too small to house all my junk or would require lots of time and money to make suitable. In all, it was a very depressing time and our rental lease was coming up for renewal quickly. I finally admitted to myself and Rocky that I didn't think I could make all this work out the way we had planned and we might have to consider other alternatives. I also made this admission to my God.
Enter Plan B. We had noticed that the house sitting on the hill directly above our property in Windover Farms was also on the market but listed at a price outside our "comfort zone". Rocky and I decided to look at it just to see what it looked like and what features homes in that range offered. The results of that visit are detailed here. We had found our new home.
As with the above section, this will be enhanced as time permits...
